After Death Communication In Dreams

DREAM Add comments

Do the dead visit us on our dreams? Dreams being dreams, can we really identify any dream as being a genuine “after death communication” (ADC)? It would appear the last thing anyone would take seriously would be a dream.

However, I’d suggest the dead, on occasion, actually visit us in our dreams. I’ve heard enough first hand accounts about this phenomenon to take it seriously. If we accept this premise as even a remote possibility, how to distinguish between a typical nightly dream from a true after death communication? Here is an account that offers some clues.

Sally’s sister died of cancer over six months ago. Sally’s sister’s last days were pretty grim. Dying of cancer is a horrible way to go. Afterwards Sally never had any dreams of her sister. Then one night Sally finally had her dream. In Sally’s dream her sister looked wonderful without any sign of malady or distress.

Sally didn’t recall the location of the dream, just that she was talking with her sister. Her sister was happy. Sally asked her sister, “Are you in pain? Do you feel ok?” In her dream, Sally was aware her sister was dead. And her sister was also aware she was dead. Both understood what had occurred in life. This self-awareness is not typical in ordinary dreams. Her sister told Sally, “I’m was fine; I have no pain. And please don’t worry about me; live your life; I’m OK.”

I asked Sally if she asked other questions. Sally said she awoke at that moment startled. I said I wished she could have asked other question. What is existence like on the other side? What is the purpose of life? But no, it seems the purpose of these communications is to bring us comfort, and other communication really does not extend far beyond that.

How to discern a possible true after-death communication from a typical dream? Dreams are wild flights of fancy. Even the most realistic dreams are recognized as dreams once we awaken. However, dreams involving ADC seem to share unique properties.

1. The dead appear healthy.
In encounters with the deceased they appear their best. They don’t appear as they did when they died, sick or infirm, but as if they had resurrected, idealized bodies.

2. The dead act as they did in life.
Dreams are usually crazy “roller coaster rides”. But with ADC dreams, the deceased appear real and their behavior is consistent with how they behaved in life. It seems as if we are having an actual conversation with the person we knew.

3. The dead act with self-awareness.
With an ADC dream we are interacting with an independent, self-aware intelligence. It feels as if someone outside our mind’s imagination is actually communicating with us. It is hard to exactly explain this, but we know it when it happens.

4. The dead leave a message.
It seems the purpose of the after-death communities is to comfort us, and to let us know they still exist and are free of any suffering. Sometimes an additional message may be given, but essentially the dead speak to let us know they are ok.

5. We remember the dream clearly.
The ADC dream will be unusually vivid and memorable. So memorable that people will clearly recall the dream long afterwards. Most dreams fade away even if they are remembered at all. But the ADC dream experience sticks in our memory. It seems as if communication with the dead creates a different type of dreaming experience.

Another story. A year ago a lady died in her bed on Saint Patrick’s Day, and she was only in her early forties. To die that young seems so unfair. The funeral was really very sad and tragic. Her cousin, a young lady in her early twenties, told me she had a dream of her long afterwards, her only dream with her. In the dream the deceased looked wonderful. She asked the deceased if she was in heaven. And the deceased said yes, and that she was happy. The young said she could remember this dream as if she had just dreamt it. Listening to her story I thought how similar it sounded to Sally’s story. The five “rules” applied to both.

How weird of you to write this at that time!

I, by coincidence, stumbled upon this website today and then I saw that post from three days ago.

I’m used to having ADC, usually people around me who die come to me after to speak a little bit and give their message to their family. One week ago, my grand-mother came to me in an ADC (she died last summer) and I didn’t telle anyone except my mother.

three days ago (the exact same day this post was written), my boyfriend saw his deceased aunt in what looks like an ADC. Even though he doesn’t believe in this, the way he described it is exactly like I feel it when I get an ADC.

Did anyone else live this situation recently?
Could that be a time where the link between the living and the dead is stronger?

    Hi Bysev,
From the people I know who had what appeared to be a dreaming ADC, the contact was made long after the deceased passed away. But I doubt there are any rules, except it is the deceased who contact us, and not we them. There may be a purpose for the contact that we cannot understand.

My uncle was murdered in Mexico almost four years ago. My uncle loved fishing and lived in a small ranch that had a river flowing right next to it. One or two months later i had an ADC. We were walking next to a river, but it wasnt his ranch it was much nicer. As were sitting fishing he tells me what happened to me was my fault, but dont worry im in a much better place now. He also looked really healthy at his best like the above article says.
I know ADC’s are real so if u have one do not doubt it. Love and Peace.

I had an interesting experience with ADC after my mother-in-law passed away. I was not able to see her prior to her death. I had two dreams. The first dream was more like a nightmare. She was trying to talk to me but there were other stronger entities pushing her aside and trying to reach me first. I woke up screaming. I can still see some of the other faces vividly – they were quite scary to me. A few nights later I had another dream. This time she came through clearly, just as you have described it, and she gave me a message of comfort. She also told me that she was sorry she was not able to reach me the first time but she had now “learned” how to come through. That is the part that I found very interesting. I felt that because she was not sure how to “come through” in the first instance, others I did not even know were pushing through. I wondered if it was like some kind of portal. I never had a similar dream again.

My Father had passed on 4 years befor my dream. It was alcohol that killed him at 52. I myself had a major alcohol problem and it greatly increased since I lost him. I was 26 at that time and I was married . We didn’t have any children . We had just bought the house my parents lived in at a real cheap price as my mother had met someone else and was moving with him. I had been on a Friday/Saturday binge and I believe this was sometime in the early morning hours of Sunday. I had trouble rembering most of my drunk times . This I remember clearly all these years later ! I woke up in my bedroom .I knew where I was and that my wife was next to me sleeping. My Dad was standing next to the bed holding my hand.He looked great and young and he was dressed like his normal truck driver self. I knew what he had on when we closed his casket ! He had all his curly hair and muscles. He had died in very bad shape.I didn’t understand at first then he sat down on the bed and I felt it move and I moved over to give him room. He told me that he knows something that I dont…and that only I can fix my problem and that if I do I will be rewarde well in life. But he then showed me something else. I remember standing with him in a hallway he had his arm around my shoulders. There was a bright light at the other end and people were coming out and he was introducing them to me. They were relatives who had passed long ago. Some I never knew in life. Next thing I remember I am back in bed and he is sitting and holding my hand again. It seemed like it had been a few hours. He said again…there is something that he knows…and he knows that I can change it but I have to do it for myself. And that if I do I will be rewarded well in life. But that only I can change it. Then he stood up and was gone. I had tried AA and quiting the drinking on my own. My wife left a few times. She always came back cause she was afraid I would die on my own. I had gotten a DWI before this . I still drove while drunk and had a few crashes. But this special day I woke up….I really woke up…I felt great (not what I should have) I was in bed and she was in the room. I told her thats it I am done drinking and I will never do it again ! her reaction was not good and she was mad about the past few days. I told her I was done drinking and I would tell her later what happend. That was back in october of 1986 Iwas 26 years old I drank from 19 to 26 enoughf for 3 lifetimes. I will be 52 this September(the age my Dad died) and I have not touched a drop of alcohol or a cigerette since I woke up that day in 1986. A few years later I got a great job as a Correction Officer for the Sherriffs Dept .I am now in my 23rd year there. We had 2 wonderful children. I have been rewarded well in life. I think that I was not supposed to wake up that morning and that the alcohol had killed me. I was given a second chance . And I made good on it. Through my job and many years as a Volunteer Firefighter I have helped people. I have been rewarded very well. I believe everything in life happens for a reason. Mickey

    Hi Mickey,
Wow, that is an incredible story. Thank you so much for sharing that with us. It is so inspiring, and it will inspire all who read it. You have been rewarded. Sometimes heaven reaches down and touches us.
    Dave

  8. David Says:

    Hi glynis,
It is true that during encounters with the deceased they appear in resurrected spiritual bodies. That is a sign you had a true encounter with your cousin. You are fortunate to have such an encounter.

  9. David Says:

    Hi Lisa,
Thank you for the intriguing story. There could have been other dark spirits trying to block your mother-in-law, or use her to gain access to you. More likely you may have had subconscious resistance and your nightmares were blocking access to your mother-in-law’s first attempt at communication. What she said was very interesting. We can learn fascinating bits of knowledge these ADC messages.
    Dave

  10. David Says:

    Hi Carlos,
I’m sorry about your uncle. And yes, ADC are real. We know it when it happens; it is not just a dream. I find it comforting to know just the possibility exists.

My Father passed over in December of 1992. He was very ill and was only 64. Cigarette smoking was his ruin. After Dad passed on I would hear a door slam quite often. It was in my head, but I feel it was a paranormal experience as it lasted quite a few months and many times a day at first…then slowly less and less.

I have tried to communicate with him on occaision, but never got any response. I usually would do this alone in my livingroom late at night.

A few months ago I had a dream that I was riding in an elevator going up. When the door opened there was my Dad, smiling, looking young and happy standing against a railing with both hands out and holding the railing.Just smiling and a slight gesture of his hand still on the rail ackowledging that I saw him…or maybe that he saw me. The elevator door closed and I remember nothing after that, as I probably woke up with surprise. The door closed quick enough that I had no time to walk out.

Someone told me that when we pass over we are all like we were when we were around 30 years old. I wonder if this is true. My Dad looked to be around that age…younger and really in good health. His grey hair was darker and he looked very relaxed and happy. He did not wear the suit he was buried in, but a short sleeved shirt and pants as if in warm weather and the sun shone behind him. My Dad never wore jeans. He looked as if he was on one of our Carribean trips and we were in a hotel…that is the feeling I got.

I have had other paranormal experiences but this was the first ADC in a dream.

  12. David Says:

    Hi Kennedy,
You may have had a psychic experience, not an ADC. Sometimes dreams contain information about the past, present or future. I think there is a difference between After Death Communication and a psychic insight. ADC usually deals with people we personally know. Psychic experiences can be about things unrelated to us. Then again, is there really any difference?

  13. Drae Says:

    Hi Dave,
I have dreams about my friend who died about 4 years ago at the age of 33. In my dreams I am always aware he is deceased. My most vivid dream last night he looked great and said something funny (he was a very funny guy). I grabbed his face, looked into his eyes, began crying and told him I missed him so much. If I am the one giving him a message do you think it is still ADC? In all of my dreams of him I am crying and tell him I miss him. I have also had some paranormal activity and was told it was him. I was told he had a message for me (that his death was an accident and not a suicide) and was told to tell him I know that now and he can rest. I have not had any activity since. Thanks!

  14. David Says:

    Drae,
That your friend looked wonderful is a sign it might be an ADC. His appearance is likely asking you to don’t cry anymore. The dead don’t need any messages from us. Instead, believe your dear friend is happy. Because he is!

  15. Sue Says:

The night my mother died, I had a very vivid dream. I still remember it after 15 years. My mother died of kidney failure amongst other things. The last few days of her life, her room smelled very bad because of her condition. It was dark and dismal. In my dream my brother and I were supposed to carry her body into the next room. We carried her into a light airy beautiful room.
she then became a little girl with golden hair. (My mother had black hair). I said to her, “Mom, you look so beautiful” She just sat there and giggled. She said, “I saw God and he talked to me” I said, “What did He say?” He said “Love all the little children”
That was the extent of the dream. It was very vivid and the colors were outstanding. After that I always felt that she was in a happy peaceful place.

  16. David Says:

    Hi Sue,
That was a beautiful story. When we see our deceased loved ones, it is while they are in heaven, and then we get a small glimpse of heaven. We see what it will be like, and it will be a beautiful place.

  17. In HIS Grip Says:

    Hi Dave!

For the living know that they shall die: but the dead know not any thing, neither have they any more a reward; for the memory of them is forgotten. Also their love, and their hatred, and their envy, is now perished; neither have they any more a portion for ever in any [thing] that is done under the sun.
    Ecclesiastes 9:5-6 (KJV)

There shall not be found among you [any one] that maketh his son or his daughter to pass through the fire, [or] that useth divination [or] an observer of times, or an enchanter, or a witch, Or a charmer, or a consulter with familiar spirits, or a wizard, or a necromancer. For all that do these things [are] an abomination unto the LORD: and because of these abominations the LORD thy God doth drive them out from before thee. Deuteronomy 18:10

For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears; And they shall turn away [their] ears from the truth, and shall be turned unto fables.
    2 Timothy 4:3-4

For such [are] false apostles, deceitful workers, transforming themselves into the apostles of Christ. And no marvel; for Satan himself is transformed into an angel of light.
    2 Corinthians 11:13-14 (KJV)

Do not turn to mediums or spiritists; do not seek them out to be defiled by them. I am the LORD your God.
    Leviticus 19:31

When they say to you, “Consult the mediums and the spiritists who whisper and mutter,” should not a people consult their God? {Should they} {consult} the dead on behalf of the living?
    Isaiah 8:19

Dave, how do you know these things?

Are you able to withstand what you might be sowing? I pray for all these people…and you, my friend?

Ok. I got one. When our cat Red died from being shot by a hunter mistaken for a rabbit, my mom and i both had nearly identical dreams of him 2 nights later. But for some reason she dreamed him as a human and had a very very long and detailed conversation with him. About his death and among other things he told her that she needn’t worry about him. i don’t know why it happened like that but i thought it worth mentioning.
