What was the child’s doppelganger?

At a holiday party I heard a strange story. During conversations I asked for unusual experiences. A friend’s mother related this uncanny story. She is now in her 60s, and this event happened long ago when she was between 4-5 years old. She said she could remember this event as if it happened yesterday, even though she was very young. The event was so vivid it was burned in her memory. She said she didn’t care if anyone believed her or not; she was quite animated describing it.

She recounted the story, how as a young girl, she walked into her 3-year-old younger brother’s bedroom. Her brother was asleep in bed. Yet at the same time her brother stood next to his bed. A double of her sleeping brother was standing by the bed while he slept!

Her toddler brother’s doppelganger turned to look at her. Even as a small child she was taken aback. Her brother’s doppelganger began to slowly walk towards her. He did not make a sound, just walked up to her as a child his age would. He stood right in front of her, facing her.  The total experience lasted for over a minute, and then he vanished.

She cried out for her mother,”Mom mom!” Mother arrived and checked her brother. He was fine, just sleeping. Nothing was amiss; everything was ok.

To this day she clearly remembers this event where most events from that age are often forgotten. I wondered…what was that all about? Assuming she saw the event exactly as described, I could only describe what she saw as a doppelganger. There are legends of doubles and fetches that were often considered bad omens, harbingers of doom. Are they only folklore?

The doppelganger phenomena are truly rare and bizarre. How to explain it?

The sighting of the duplicate of an individual involved in a deadly situation is called a crisis apparition. This is one of the most common of paranormal events. It appears the spirit of someone in a near-death situation may visit us. Confusing the crisis apparition with the doppelganger may have given the doppelganger its bad reputation. However, this young child was merely sleeping. He was not in a crisis.

Mystics, saints and holy men and women were reported to be able to appear at two locations at one time. This is called bilocation. However, this child was a toddler, not a mystic.

Perhaps what she had seen was a tulpa? A tulpa is believed to be a thoughtform made visible. However, according to Buddhism the tulpa required great mystical abilities to manifest them. The tulpa/thoughform is an act of conscious creation. It seemed unlikely a toddler could manifest a tulpa, even by accident. Has anyone seen an experienced practitioner create any tulpas recently?

Abduction by fairies

There is another unsettling possibility. In folklore there were many stories of children being abducted by fairies, to be replaced with changelings. These legends seem to be an explanation why some children die mysteriously. Was it a demonic entity? This phenomenon exists today as alien abductions. There are ideas around that some children are “star children” who are the result of alien experimentation. Did she stumble on an attempted “alien abduction”? Was this small child being visited by an entity that took the brother’s shape when confronted by his sister?

If it was an unknown or alien entity, what was it doing in the toddler’s bedroom? What was its purpose? Children are said to be more sensitive to the otherworldly then adults.  The sister may have perceived what is normally invisible to adults.  Perhaps she accidentally interfered with its goals.

If something like this happened 60 years ago, it could happen today to anyone, anywhere. Folklore is filled with methods to protect us against “entities”. Maybe they had good reasons for it.

Could it have been a time slip? A burp in time from something that has happened? Maybe something that was going to happen.

    Hi Steve,
Maybe! Perhaps the sister experienced a precognitive vision? However, she said her brother’s doppelganger (not her term but mine) looked completely real and natural, not like a ghost. I’ve heard ghost stories before, but never a doppelganger story. I really have no clue what happened.

Astral Projection. Young ones are often less firmly sewn into their bodies and can travel freely as spirit, as they get older it usually passes. But this was definitely astral projection. While holding my son while he was sleeping (2yrs) once I also heard him in his play room playing with his favorite toy, it going off electronically by itself. I have no doubt his form was in my arms sleeping however his spirit was not done playing! The same with this boy, he was studying himself, probably surprised to see himself there in bed as he felt quite normal. Registering another person in the room caused his biological forces to take back over and pulled him back into his body (he vanished). Just my thoughts :)

    Hi Andrea,
I like your explanation. In fact, I think you are correct. Young children are probably more likely to experience spontaneous astral projection then adults. They don’t know any better! The toddler’s dreams may have turned into an out-of-body experience. And his sister, also a young child, was sensitive enough to witness it.

our assumption is that she, saw it using her physical body’s eyes. what if she already in astral projection too, like her brother was (this explains why she can see him clearly), but she not realized it yet?

also… this kinda remind me with the Insidious thing…

  6. David Says:

    Hi Susito,
That is an interesting idea. Perhaps she was partially astral projecting. I suspect that is how people see ghosts, when they are slightly outside their body and don’t realize it. Astral projection may not be a total separation from the physical body and could exist in varying degrees, from slight to complete. According to near-death out-of-body experience, we are able so see and hear outside our body without the use of our physical eyes and ears. If we are slightly outside our body, do we also gain access to these spiritual senses?

Ive had a few experiences with astral projection where i actually woke up in my room either laying on the floor or stanging besides my bed next to my actual body, which was still asleep. I was basically a ghost, and was able to walk around the house and even the neighborhood, although i was too afraid to wander far because i was afraid to get lost from my body. These experiences started when i was 19 and Im now 30. I dont’t know how or why they started they just did.
I also had an experience with a tulpa once. I believe I created it by accident and it was the most terrifying thing that ever happened to me and I hope it never happens again. I think it happened because I had the biggest crush on this one guy when I was about 20. Well This guy was on my mind all the time and one morning while i was lying in bed, I rolled over and felt a warm body lying next to me. I only saw this creature’s back and the back of his head because it was facing away from me but It looked exactly like the guy that i was crushing on. I was so scarred that i punched this thing in the back (and it felt as if i punched an actual person). After the punch, this thing gracefully rolled off the side of the bed and slithered away and dissapeared somewhere. It slithered because only the top half was human and the bottom half was like a long flesh colored snake:(…. If i wanted to, i believe i could create another tulpa very easily but I’m afraid i might scare myself into a heart attack!

    Hi Chrissy,
Thanks for that incredible story. The tulpa part scared me!
