lunar-eclipseEARTHQUAKE UPDATE:  DECEMBER 21, ONE DAY AFTER THE LUNAR ECLIPSE, 7.4 EARTHQUAKE HITS NEAR JAPAN!  Major 7.4-magnitude quake hits near Japanese islands: USGS

“The quake hit at 2:19 am local time (1719 GMT Tuesday), 153 kilometres (95 miles) east of Chichi-shima in Japan’s remote Bonin island region and at a shallow depth of just 14 kilometres.”  An even bigger 7.4 earthquake has hit near Japan following the lunar eclipse. and the Iran earthquke!

We have two stories I believe are related.  Tonight on this December 20 we will have a winter solstice lunar eclipse. This is a rare event, to have a lunar eclipse during the longest night of the year, the winter solstice.  The last time this occurred was in 1638.

Earlier today Iran suffered a 6.3 magnitude earthquake.  I was expecting something like this to happen when the full moon was approaching its lunar eclipse.  This is just one more example of the power of the moon and its influence over the earth.  Will there be more earthquakes to follow?

The lunar eclipse:  Lunar Eclipse Tonight Will Cast Rare Shadow on Winter Solstice

A total lunar eclipse will be visible across North America tonight, just in time for the longest night of the year. This will be the first time a lunar eclipse has fallen on the winter solstice since 1638.  The Earth’s shadow will begin to blot out the moon at 1:32 am EST.

Another story about the eclipse:  Will Tuesday Be the Darkest Day in 372 Years?

The earthquake:  Magnitude 6.5 earthquake strikes Iran

december-20-full-moonA magnitude 6.5 earthquake struck southeastern Iran on Monday, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. The quake occurred at 10:11 p.m. local time, or 1:41 p.m. ET, according to the USGS.

Iran earthquake update:  Hundreds trapped after earthquake destroys villages in Iran

Nine aftershocks followed the 6.5 magnitude quake, which hit at least thirty villages in the southeast of the country.  At least seven people have been killed in a 6.5 magnitude earthquake that jolted southeast Iran yesterday, destroying remote villages and trapping hundreds.

  1. Kutch Science Says:

This Winter Solstice is some thing special. All solstice do not fall on FULL Moon DAY (PURNIMA) and all All FULL Moon DAY (PURNIMA) do not Have Moon ECLIPSE.

Though names are FUNNY as said WINTER SOLSTICE but the SUN is in the southern hemisphere is full of summer. SHOULD HAVE NAMED as SOUTHERN solstice.

Sun is in SOUTH on the Tropic of Capricorn so having a gravitation pull towards south While the MOON is exactly in Opposition in the NORTH on the TROPIC of Cancer and exerting a gravitation pull towards North on sea, water and continental plates.
RECENTLY Increased seismic activity in last 2week in NW HIMALAYAN range around Hindukush indicates possible more activity in the region in coming days when more gravitational forces of SUN and MOON are active to exaggerates and stimulate the tectonic forces. worth to KEEP watch of the area and USGS data.

    Hi Kutch,
Thanks for the information. That is very welcome and very interesting. The sun and moon offer alerts to possible earth changes. Let us watch the skies!

Kutch, thanks for the post cause there are not many out there. I have an app for my iphone that shows quakes around the world and I check it daily. Man o man there has been an explosion of quakes. Making me nervous. I live in the California valley. Thanks for the info on the tug o war going on, I didn’t think about the Sun aspect of it. What do you think is going to happen when they switch sides? I should go play n Reno for the night.

  4. Angela Says:

We have just had an earthquake in Cumbria UK measuring 3.7 I beleive there to be a link between the moon and this

  5. David Says:

    Hi Angela,
And we just had a 7.4 quake near Japan. This cannot be just chance.
