Is channeling spirit guides a good idea or dangerous? Abramelin’s answer.

Are spirit guides a good idea? Or is channeling spirit guides actually contacting dangerous entities and should be avoided? The answer may not be entirely clear. We have examples of channeling with both productive and disastrous results.

Another open question is when channeling, are we actually contacting an objective disincarnate spirit or our own inner self, higher self or subconscious. Does it make any difference? Individuals who had contact with spirit beings, real or imagined, had an impact on history.

Esther Hicks is the famous author of The Law of Attraction and a leading motivational speaker on the topic of the law of attraction. Her knowledge of the topic is profound with surprising depth. She is known for her spirit guide Abraham who inspired her. Abraham led her to personal fame and fortune as well as inspiring many.

Hicks was introduced into spirit guides by a book by Jane Roberts, author of Seth Speaks. Jane Roberts was a writer and spirit medium that introduced channeling to a wide audience. Roberts was introduced to channeling thru experimenting with a Ouija board. Eventually she came into communication with her spirit guide…Seth.

Channeling and communication with spirit guides is denounced by organized religion. Yet religion seems to be inspired by spirit guides too. The difference is when religious revelations are written down into scripture, it makes all the difference. Joseph Smith, Jr., founder of the Church of Latter Day Saints wrote the Book of Mormon after contact with the angel Moroni. Now Mormonism is a world religion. Was this channeling turned into a religion?

Judaism and Christianity were inspired by contact with what could be called Spirit Guides too. They stood the test of time because their adherents had the good sense to write down these experiences into scriptures.  Scripture could be described as “safe” channeling for the masses. Instead of trying to do it your self, just accept someone else’s experiences as truth. Still, scriptures without profound truths at its core will not endure. Where did these profound truths come from? Divine revelation, or from human reason?

For some thoughts, I will consult an unusual source, a famous magical grimoire, The Sacred Magic of Abramelin The Mage. This manuscript was written in the 15th century, seemingly inspired by an Egyptian mage, and is considered one of the great books of magic. This grimoire proclaimed all other magic in error except its own method. It viewed all attempts at contacting spirits as making pacts with demons. What it introduced was a new concept…developing a relationship with your Guardian Angel.

This idea was influential on the modern occult movement. The Abramelin operation took 6 months to complete.  During this time the adherent followed rituals of prayer, piety, purification and asceticism, attempting to enter a heightened state of consciousness. At the end of this period of time the adherent attempted to contact their Holy Guardian Angel.

It appears the Abramelin method of contacting one’s angel (or higher self) is to essentially become like an angel. The specific rituals seem almost besides the point, what matters is that one “vibrates” at the same frequency as the spirit being one seeks to communicate with. If an angel will not lower itself to communicate with an un-evolved personality, then one has to raise one’s self to the angel’s level.

This seems to make sense with channeling, regardless if it is real or only in our mind. We channel who we are. If someone dwells in the depths of hostility and negativity, they will contact entities/subconscious thoughts that share these spiritual vibrations. Richard Ramirez, the infamous Night Stalker serial killer could be an example of channeling extreme negativity with horrifying consequences.

Maybe the way to contact the angelic world is to think like an angel. History is filled with saints, prophets and mystics of all religions who performed miracles with angelic assistance. Was it because they attained a state of existence that mirrored the Divine? Which is a problem for the average individual. It’s not easy being a saint. Most of us don’t have the inclination. How can anyone accomplish this great task?

Here is my suggestion for the average man or woman to perform the Abramelin operation without going into seclusion for 6 months. Mirroring the divine is not a matter of piety and religious fervor. Religious people can be quite evil in their devotion to their doctrines. Angels are beings of love. The path of the angel is the path of love. Not only love for spouse, family and friends, but love for all humanity, all living things.

To love all things unconditionally does not come naturally, but we can train ourselves. Pay attention to the merit in all individuals. Develop empathy. Recognize the value in everyone. Spend some time talking to the lonely old neighbor, and actually listen to him or her. Be positive towards others, offer encouragement and help without expectation of reward. Be a blessing to the world. Do this often and consistently, and you will begin to vibrate like the angels themselves. Watch for the results that follow!

    Interesting Post!

As a Channel myself, I would say that the risk level you accept is your choice – and your choice alone!

When I learned to Channel, we were taught that if you asked for a high level Guide, a high level Guide would show up. Given my experience, as well as the experience of my Channeling classmates – and others I have heard of – I believe it to be the truth.

Plus, one of the rules that all Guides HAVE to follow is: If you ask them a straight out question, they have to answer truthfully. Even the nasties. They DO exist. But you don’t have to deal with them.

When (if you decide to learn to Channel) you get your first Guide – insist that they be the highest level Guide that you can get! And insist on that and nothing less! And ask them questions, you will find that the Guide that you get will have an agenda that closely matches yours; if not, you can ‘fire’ a Guide – it’s totally your choice.

I learned to Channel because it’s like getting an unlimited library pass to the universe. It is fun, informative, and if you learn and do it right – safe.

If you insist on scaring yourself or look for ways to screw yourself up, the paranormal is quite capable of doing that. But, it doesn’t have to be that way.

The misuse of fear is a problem everywhere, especially the paranormal. But, try to not let fear drive you away from a very rewarding experience – Channeling can be a wonderful way to learn about the universe where we live!

    Hi Mike,
Thanks for the thoughtful comments. Getting guidance from an experienced channel is probably a wise thing for a beginner. If someone does not really understand what they are doing, they can get into trouble. This is serious stuff and not a game.

    Hi David,

I respectfully disagree with just about everything your commenter stated above.

I guest im one of the different types of christians i beleive in ghost even the ones that go bump in the night. But with channeling i feel that people should be careful as posted above even the nasty ones answer. So if we let something in how do we get it out? I believe we allow ourselves to be contacted by ghost and become aware as much as we wish to be. so if you let it in how do you get it out. ghost just like us can be more in contact with this world even more so when they have unfinished business or they wish do something. So whats to say what you channel isnt more in contact with the living and dead than you are. How would you get it out if it wished to stay?

    Hi Dave

Somehow I ‘stumbled across’ your blog was I was searching for fireworks symbology (although I suspect it didn’t happen by chance) and I have to say, I’m finding it fascinating reading. Will definitely be bookmarking. I don’t usually comment on other blogs, but this time for some reason, I felt like I had to, even though it’s an old post.

I have been channeling for the past five years, and I’ve never found it to be anything but perfectly safe, and a wonderful source of guidance. I am so very thankful for it. Prior to that, I had done a number of workshops in an attempt to learn how to channel, but every time ended up frustrated because I could not do it. For some time before I did start channeling, I began to become aware of an energy presence around me while I was meditating – difficult to put into words, but it was a very physical experience. I knew that someone was trying to ‘come in’, but it just wasn’t happening. Then one day, out of the blue, it did, without me having to do anything. I was lying on the grass in a parkland where I occasionally walk my dogs and suddenly said something out loud – something I wouldn’t say, and I knew immediately that it didn’t come from me. And that was how my channeling experience began.

Fast forward five years, and I have received much very useful, uplifting, insightful and helpful information from this source, sometimes receiving information that I didn’t actually believe, or didn’t want to hear at the time, only to find out weeks or months later that to my complete surprise, it had come to pass, exactly as I had been told it would. There have even been times when I have actually argued the point, only to be proven wrong! And times also, when I have been told off for not doing things I know I should be doing, or for doing things I know I shouldn’t. Weird, I know. Time and again I have received independent validation of these messages. It still fascinates me today that I can even do it.

I have never channeled in the presence of anyone else. It is something that I do by myself at home. I suspect my family and friends mostly think I am nuts (although they don’t say it!). I really don’t talk to them about it.

In 2005 I bought a digital point and shoot camera, and almost from the outset, I began to get a strong sense that I was being helped and guided with my photography. It is now 2013, and I am very aware of the influence the spirit realms continue to have on my artistic endeavours. They like to make their presence known, sometimes subtly, sometimes not so much. :)

Funny that you should mention Abraham Hicks. I discovered Esther & Jerry this time a year ago, and have been watching a lot of their clips on Youtube. I was thrilled a couple of weeks ago to discover that Esther will be in my city (Melbourne, Australia) on 24th March, and I am going. So excited. I have never resonated with anyone as much as I do with Abraham Hicks.

As to whether it is safe or not, I can only tell you that my experiences have been wonderful. I am so grateful for the help I receive. I have never once been concerned about lower level energies or entities. My experience has been that if you come from a place of purity and loving intention, and project that loving intention towards your family and friends as you meditate, you can only attract to youself higher vibrational beings. As the wonderful Dr Wayne Dyer says, lower level energies cannot exist in the presence of higher vibrational energies. Darkness cannot exist in the presence of light. Just remember who you really are, and come always from that space.

I apologise for the length of my comment. You have pushed all the right buttons with your post. This is something I am extremely passionate about. :)

    kindest regards
    Tracy Edgar

Thank you for your long comment! The comments I get are often better then anything I write: your comments were wondnerful. We don’t see these topics discussed often. We are dealing with topics ignored by society. I like to think people like you and I are on the cutting edge. Unrecognized for now…but not forever.

I am new to the topic of sprituality and meditation. I have been doing meditation and spiritual cleansing and upliftment for about a week, and am having great results for the purposes I’m trying to achieve.

I would like to contact spirit guides. one person says lift my vibration by imagining a stairs that leads to a happy place, and also opening chankras.

What if while inviting my Spirit guides, I experience a negative entity?

Please discuss the safety issues with this topic.

  9. David Says:

    Hi Rich,
I’d suggest the best defense against negative entities (which exist) is to have a foundation in a spiritual tradition, and not be subject to any whim that passes by. A spirit guide should assist, and not become your master. I approach spirit guides as I would a living human salesman…be wary. Have a strong personal identiy. Know what you are doing. An example, American Indians have strong traditions that govern such things.
